Can a homeowner do their own plumbing in Kentucky? ›

Plumbing permits may be issued to licensed master plumbers or to homeowners for plumbing in their own personal residences. All plumbing work, other than that performed by a homeowner with his/her own permit, must be installed by a licensed journeyman plumber under the supervision of a licensed master plumber.

You need a building permit for all construction that involves the construction, repair, movement to another site, removal, or demolition of any building or structure. All electrical, plumbing and mechanical work needs a separate permit for each trade.

Homeowners may obtain electrical permits for work on property they own and in which they currently reside. Homeowner electrical permits cannot be issued for vacant property, rental property, duplexes or mobile homes. Permit applications are available online. Electrical permits cost $10 each.

Things to remember about Electrical Permits

A homeowner may obtain a permit if he/she is performing the work on their own home, and the home is the owner's primary residence for the next 12 months. Otherwise a licensed electrician is required for obtaining electrical permits.

If you do not get a building permit before installing/constructing your shed, you will be liable for additional fees in addition to the original fee of the permit. At times they may force you to cease construction, or will remove/demolish the shed altogether.

Kentucky does not issue statewide general contractor licenses. Instead, only electricians, plumbers and HVAC contractors must have a license from the state's Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. However, you may need to obtain a license or register as a general contractor at the city or county level.

Obtaining a journeyman electrician license in the state of Kentucky takes about four years of electrical work experience, as well as 576 hours of classroom training. You must hold a valid journeyman electrician license for two years before you become eligible to earn a master electrician license.
