What is the lesson of Proverbs 29? ›

1A person often rebuked who becomes obstinate Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy. 2When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked person rules, people groan. 3A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad, But he who involves himself with prostitutes wastes his wealth.

[1] He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. [2] When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. 12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. 13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.

[7] Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: [8] Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: [9] Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. A sound heart is the life of the flesh: But envy the rottenness of the bones.

Therefore, the chief aim of the book of Proverbs is to bring divine truth into proper focus, enabling us to look at life through God's eyes—from His eternal, all-knowing point of view—and then live accordingly. Proverbs teaches us how to gain wisdom from God's reproofs so that, in the power of the Spirit, we will obey.

Stylistically set apart from regular speech, they are often metaphorical or symbolic in nature. Speakers can use proverbs to impart knowledge, offer advice, teach or reinforce morals, make an argument, relieve interpersonal tensions, aid in understanding, or to console or inspire others.

As the ESV Study Bible puts it, “Proverbs states its theme right at the book's beginning (1:1-7): its goal is to describe and instill “wisdom” in God's people, a wisdom that is founded in the “fear of the Lord” and that works out covenant life in the practical details of everyday situations and relationships.”

She is not afraid of the snow for her household: For all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; Her clothing is silk and purple.

Much of this passage refers to negative consequences of unwise attitudes or behavior: stubbornness leads to brokenness. Lack of self-control brings shame. Ignorant, ungodly rulers spread sin and corruption. Pride leads to humiliation.

It is tempting to bicker with an irrational, unfair, immoral person. One feels a natural desire to silence a fool, if for no other reason than to stop hearing their nonsense (Proverbs 27:3). That's not always a good idea (Proverbs 26:4), nor is it always possible.

This verse identifies pride as another sin (Proverbs 6:16–19) and predicts its consequences. Eventually, those who act with arrogance will be humiliated.
